West Mayo community mourns passing of much-loved woman

The death has occurred of Deirdre Hughes (née Greene), New Road, Westport.

A member of a popular and widely respected local family, she will be dearly missed by her husband Harry, sons Henry and Richard, daughters Orla, Máire and Stephanie, grandson Liam Good, sons-in-law Jack Good and Jason Walmsley, daughter-in-law Laura Fahey and Máire’s partner Conor McEllin.

She is also survived by her brothers Ronnie Greene, Des Greene and Alan Kelly, sisters-in-law Joy Kelly, Clare Greene, Anne (Joe) McGovern, Marion Hughes, Cathy Hughes, Orla (Eamonn) O'Carroll and Eleanor (Kevin) Moran, brothers-in-law Cathal, Patrick (Olive), Owen (Karen), Richard (Jean), Vincent and Declan (Catherine) Hughes, as well as all the wider Hughes and Greene families, and her many friends, to whom heartfelt sympathy is tendered.

Deirdre was predeceased by her parents Christina (née Walsh) and William Greene, niece Máire Cristín Greene, nephew Pádraig Hughes, sister-in-law Kim Hughes (née Ryan) and brother-in-law Seamus Hughes.

Paying tribute to her, Westport Councillor Brendan Mulroy said her passing was a significant loss to the local community where she always had a smile and a kind word for everybody, as well as doing a lot of good voluntary work.

Many warm tributes are also paid to the deceased on the condolences page of the death notices website, RIP.ie.

"Deirdre was an absolute lady, a really lovely woman to meet over the years," one said.

Another stated: "She was such a formidable, beautiful lady, with so much love for her family."

A further tribute made reference to her "creativity in, and love for, her beautiful garden, which was a piece of restful paradise in town."

Deirdre will be reposing at her residence (F28 AE33) this evening (Monday) from 5 to 8 p.m.

Departing her residence on Tuesday morning at 11 a.m., arriving to St. Mary's Church, Westport at 11.30 for Requiem Mass at 12.30 p.m..

Burial takes place afterwards in Aughagower Cemetery.
