Renton twins shine at All-Ireland Cross Country Championships
A HUGE well done to all athletes from Westport AC who participated at the recent in the All-Ireland Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships in Waterford.
The weather was atrocious, with heavy rain with strong winds for the minor and junior races before the sun came out for the senior boys. There were tough hills and plenty of muck - some might say it was an ideal cross country course!
The Sacred Heart minor girls are officially the best in Ireland and brought team gold back to Westport.
Individual gold and bronze medals were secured by wonder-twins Freya and Holly Renton and then, to secure team gold, there were phenomenal runs from Erin Walsh (39th) and Eimear Jennings (60th). They were an astonishing 50 points ahead of the second placed team.
Next up was Maud O’Reilly who had a great run and came 53rd in the junior girls race in a highly competitive field.
The day ended on a high with three senior Rice College boys bringing an incredible team silver back to Westport. All boys ran a brilliant race, with Ethan Doherty getting 15th place, Ruairi Hollywood 18th and Padraig Corduff 20th. A happy ending to a great cross country season.
