Appeal for action on traffic nightmare location in Mayo's county town

TAILBACKS caused by traffic at the Johnny McHale's junction in Castlebar have again been highlighted at a municipal district meeting.

Cars are being backed up to Gallows Hill when people are turning right at the junction onto Newantrim Street.

A filter lane would allow traffic to flow better, Councillor Blackie Gavin told the meeting.

There is enough room for one, he pointed out to management.

In relation to Gallows Hill, Councillor Donna Sheridan asked for a report on what can be done to ease traffic issues at the location.

Councillor Ger Deere said he had asked about traffic lights at the location before and asked for the reason why they hadn't gone ahead.

On delays, it had taken 19 minutes to get from the top of Pound Road to Gallows Hill on a Friday evening, he stated.

He also pointed out the number of new housing projects going on out that road which would add to traffic.

Antiquated estate lighting needs replacing

AN antiquated lighting system in the Maryland estate in Castlebar needs to be upgraded.

The request has come from Councillor Ger Deere who said there are a lot of black spots in the area.

The lighting is 'very antiquated', he told a local area meeting, and he asked that the council would look at upgrading it.
