Not to be for Mayo against Down in minor championship
MAYO minors played host to Down in Adrian Freeman Park Tooreen on Sunday, with Enda Loughnane refereeing.
The hosts made just change to the starting 15 from their previous minor C championship game, with Annie McGreavy coming in for Westport club-mate Ruby Lambert.
Down won the throw-in, Mayo turned it over and through a passage of play went for their first point which resulted in a wide.
Shortly afterwards Down got their first point of the game, followed by a second.
Mayo responded with two points, one each by Laoise Greally and Geri Maye Henry, while goalkeeper Sarah Dee made a few excellent saves.
However, Down managed to put five shots into the back of the net, and by half-time the visitors hdl a 5-5 to Mayo’s 0-2 lead.
Mayo got off to a good start in the second half and Geri Maye Henry once again scored a point, but Down proved too strong for the hosts.
Mayo’s never gave up and played with great heart and attitude until the final whistle. However, it just wasn’t to be for the players on the day as Down won by 5-9 to 0-3.
The Mayo team was as follows: Sarah Dee; Annie McGreavy, Katlyn McGreal, Ella Fallon; Rebekan Monaghan, Megan O’Malley, Éabha Delaney; Laoise Greally, Laura Flanagan; Ava Dooley, Geri Maye Henry, Kate Tener; Ciara Kennedy Cathy Greally, Aoibhin Lynskey. The subs brought on were Katie Harmon and Heidi O’Malley.
Meanwhile, the Mayo senior team will play Tyrone on Saturday (April 8) in the Very National League Division 4 final at the Joe Fox Memorial Park, Tang, Co. Westmeath. The game will throw in at 2 p.m.
