Mayo minor team named for first Connacht championship encounter

Mayo manager Sean Deane and his selectors have named their team and panel for their opening round robin game in the Connacht GAA minor football championship against Roscommon. The game throws in at 6.30 p.m. this evening (Friday, April 14) in Dr. Hyde Park, Roscommon.

Three players that featured last season – Westport custodian Conor Meaney, captain Rio Mortimer and vice-captain Tom Lydon – are all listed to start.

Meaney, who was understudy to David Dolan last year, gets his chance to impress in goal, while 2022 Electric Ireland Minor All-Star Rio Mortimer, Claremorris, has a new berth this year at centre-back, with The Neale GAA's rising star, Tom Lydon, listed to start at centre-forward.

County minor champions Castlebar Mitchels have three players named in the team, with Fionan O'Reilly set to start at wing-back, Shane Cunningham partnering Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin's Dara Neary at midfield, and the deadly accurate Gavin Forry lining out at corner forward.

Newcomers this year include the impressive Eoin McGreal from Garrymore at full-back, Senan Guilfoyle from Eastern Gaels at wing-forward and Kiltane's highly-rated Josh Carey at full-forward.

Four-time GAA All-Star Colm Boyle is a new addition to the Mayo Under 17 backroom team this year.

Ronan Hynes from Sligo will be referee on the day. Mayo GAA will have live updates across all social media platforms this evening. The game will be streamed live on the Connacht GAA website and tickets can be purchased on Universe.

The Mayo Under 17 team in full for this evening's game is as follows: Conor Meaney (Westport); James Lavelle (Belmullet), Eoin McGreal (Garrymore), Yousif Coghill (Breaffy); Jamie Clarke (Bohola Moy Davitts), Rio Mortimer (Claremorris), Fionan O'Reilly (Castlebar Mitchels); Dara Neary (Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin), Shane Cunningham (Castlebar Mitchels); Colm Lynch (Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin), Tom Lydon (The Neale), Senan Guilfoyle (Eastern Gaels); Darragh Beirne (Claremorris), Josh Carey (Kiltane), Gavin Forry (Castlebar Mitchels).
