Pat McCabe's Country and Irish coming to Mayo theatre

THEATRE enthusiasts are bound to delight at the Linenhall Art Centre’s upcoming offerings, which feature a duo of immensely talented productions to relish.

Described as ‘Beckette-esque’, Country and Irish, written by Pat McCabe, embodies the Linenhall stage in Castlebar on Wednesday, April 26.

Presented by Fight2Flight and in association with Smock Alley, Country and Irish introduces audiences to Donnie Burris, a character who escapes life’s dissatisfactions (namely an overbearing mother and a treacherous girlfriend) by immersing himself in his own fantasy world, that of an imagined gangster movie.

This play, a gritty black comedy from the writer of Breakfast on Pluto and The Butcher Boy, stars Peter Gowen who previously collaborated with McCabe on the film adaptation of the former.

“I performed in the Linenhall in my one man show The Chronicles of Oggle in 2015 and I am delighted to be back on stage in Castlebar,” said actor Peter Gowen. “The audience were great last time and gave the show such an enthusiastic response. I am really excited about bringing Patrick McCabe’s brilliant play to the Linenhall and expect audience members to thoroughly enjoy.”

FROM A LOW AND QUIET SEA

Decadent Theatre Company returns to the Linenhall on Friday, May 5, with the powerful From A Low and Quiet Sea, as directed by Andrew Flynn.

Adapted for the stage by Donal Ryan and based on his own Booker Prize nominated novel, it tells the tale of four very different people searching for their own version of home, and a sense of belonging.

Farouk, the refugee who is torn between protecting his family and losing everything they have ever known. Lampy, the young man who is battling settling with what life has given him or pursuing something better. John, the penitent manipulator who wonders is it too late to change his ways. And finally, Florence, whose son Lampy is acting strangely, forcing her to look within for answers.
