Trial traffic change suggested to see if a congestion solution can be found in Mayo town
A Fine Gael councillor has urged Mayo County Council to trial traffic changes it implemented in Ballina for the visit of US President Joe Biden last week for a month-long period to see if it can provide a better solution to the ongoing congestion in the town.
Councillor Jarlath Munnelly explained his thinking: “The council implemented changes in traffic in the town very quickly, including removing traffic islands. I'm suggesting that the council should trial two-way traffic in this part of town for another month see how it goes.”
He is suggesting the implementation of two-way traffic along the River Moy at Emmet Street and over the bridges in the town.
Councillor Munnelly said many people reported to him noticing that despite the additional traffic in town last week, vehicles were in fact moving better.
Mayo County Council are planning to conduct a review of traffic in the town, but Councillor Munnelly said this is an ideal opportunity to make a meaningful change to the traffic quickly.
“Let's not wait for another study,” he said. “Trial the two-way traffic along the river for a month and see how it goes.”
