Mayo beaten by Tyrone in second round of the Christy Ring Cup
Mayo were defeated by Tyrone in the second round of the Christy Ring Cup at Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar, this afternoon.
Tyrone left the county town venue with a 2-22 to 1-17 victory over the hosts, a positive result for them after their opening round draw with neighbours Derry last weekend.
For Mayo it's a second successive defeat following last Sunday's narrow defeat away to Meath.
The home side were well in contention for most of the first half and the game was tied at 0-8 each when Tyrone struck for their first goal on 29 minutes.
The goal was scored by Sean Duffin, who finished a long-range free from Liam Dunphy to the net past Bobby Douglas, the Mayo 'keeper.
By half-time the visitors' advantage was just two points – 1-10 to 0-11 – but they started the second half well and were already six points ahead at 1-14 to 0-11 when they struck for a second goal on 47 minutes.
This time it was Lorcan Devlin who found the net and there was no way back from there for Mayo, who scored a late consolation goal but ultimately succumbed to an eight-point defeat to leave them bottom of the group after two games.
Next up for Mayo is another home game against London. Throw-in on Sunday week (April 30) in Hastings Insurance MacHale Park, Castlebar, is at 12.30 p.m.
