Mayo FF whip withdraws support for controversial meeting
The whip of the Fianna Fáil party on Mayo County Council has flagged his intention to withdraw his support for the holding of a special meeting of the authority on Friday to discuss migrant accommodation.
Ballinrobe Councillor Damian Ryan has this afternoon been in contact with his party colleagues to inform them of his position.
He stated: "Having had discussions with most of you over the last few days and the controversy over a special meeting, it is my intention to contact the cathaoirleach and meetings administrator to withdraw my name and support for this special meeting.
"I am now asking that a general item on our emergency provision be put on the agenda for the May 8 meeting instead looking for additional supports for the people we have already accommodated and propose to accommodate."
It is understood he has the support of his party in respect of the climbdown.
His withdrawal of support is now likely to see the meeting being cancelled - but that remains uncertain at this point as the two other group whips, Councillor Peter Flynn (FG) and Councillor Michael Kilcoyne (Ind.) are determined that it goes ahead.
The cathaoirleach of the council, Councillor Seamus Weir, is expected to clarify the position tomorrow.
But the political repercussions from the saga are likely to be felt for some time to come.
