ATU Mayo hosting open evening

ATLANTIC Technological University (ATU) Mayo will open its doors to the public on Thursday, May 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. for an open evening on new and current courses delivered at the campus in Castlebar.

The two-hour event will be of interest to Leaving Cert students, mature learners and anyone interested in upskilling or returning to third-level education, full-time or part-time.

Visitors will have opportunities to talk to academic and student support staff about the range of degree programmes delivered on campus such as in Applied Social Care, Outdoor Education and Leisure, History and Geography, General Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Early Childhood Care and Education, Culture and Environment and the new honours degree in Psychology in the ATU Department of Nursing, Health Science and Integrated Care.

Clinical skills labs and lecture theatres will be open during the event for one-to-one talks with staff and current students and a series of scheduled talks will commence at 4 p.m.

ATU Mayo offers 15 CAO undergraduate degree programmes along with a suite of postgraduate and part-time courses ranging from Level 6 (Higher Certificate) to Level 9 (Masters) postgraduate level.

Dr. Justin Kerr, vice-president, ATU Mayo, and Head of the School of Health Science, Wellbeing and Society, says: “Prospective students are often considering their CAO options at this stage and with the CAO ‘change-of-mind’ facility opening it is a good time to visit the campus and get information directly from current students and staff.

This year, we are delighted to offer a new programme, the Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Psychology (AU698). This four-year L8 course provides graduates with a broad and comprehensive foundation in psychology, the study of human behaviour and the mind. It marks a new trajectory for the Mayo university campus, and we are delighted to showcase this programme at our open evening.”

All major areas of psychology will be covered, including cognitive, social, neurological, and developmental psychology.

“A degree in psychology provides a gateway to a variety of engaging and interesting professions. It provides a strong foundation for further training in disciplines such as clinical psychology, health psychology, sports psychology, and educational psychology.

“A degree in this field also equips students with important transferable skills, ideal for a variety of people-focused careers, such as HR, life-coaching, business mentoring, market research, and media,” added Dr Kerr.
