New footbridge over river in west Mayo town mooted

A FOOTBRIDGE over the Carrowbeg River linking Knockranny Woods with the Ballinrobe Road in Westport has been suggested by a local councillor.

Commenting on the ongoing flood defence works at Cois Abhainn and Ashwood, Councillor Christy Hyland suggested a footbridge be installed over the river to link these two parts of town, and on to the greenway.

It would be a fantastic facility for local residents and visitors and from his enquiries it could be installed at a cost of €30,000.

Councillor Peter Flynn supported his idea, saying it made sense to connect the Ballinrobe Road with Knockranny.

Management highlighted a number of issues that would need to be teased out - the lands are not public property, there would have to be an environmental assessment, and Coillte would also have to come on board.

A report on the project was requested by Councillor Hyland.
