Two members of Mayo hospital medical staff evacuated from Sudan

Two members of the medical staff of Mayo University Hospital have been evacuated from war-turn Sudan.

Senator Lisa Chambers revealed they had returned there for a visit and got caught up in the ongoing conflict.

She revealed: "The doctors were able to get out but it was not without difficulty. Many people worked to achieve that.

"We send our thoughts to those affected in solidarity.

"We need to consider how best we can support those on the ground in what is an aid emergency because the reports we are hearing are just terrifying.

"There is a horrific situation on the ground."
