Students from south Mayo school claim Charles McGoldrick Cup at Connacht golf event

SEVENTY-FIVE junior golfers took part in the Connacht schools golf event at Castlebar Golf Club, participating in their respective boys and girls nine-hole stableford competitions.

There was the added attraction of the Charles McGoldrick Cup for the best school pair across both divisions, which was won by a duo from south Mayo.

Fifty-five boys and 20 girls competed, with top honours going to Emily Griffith, Balla Secondary School, who won the girls event with 24 points, while Cian Mannion (Coosan National School) took the boys award, also with a score of 24.

The Charles McGoldrick Cup found its way to Ballinrobe Community School who pipped St. Jarlath’s of Tuam on the countback over the best card, as both sides had an aggregate score of 40 points for their pairing. Representing Ballinrobe CS were Max Humphreys and Ben Egan (pictured).

Girls top performers:

1st Emily Griffith, Balla Secondary School, 24 points; 2nd Grace Brosnan, Our Lady’s Bower, Athlone, 24; gross Noreen O’Neill, Clifden Community School, 12; 3rd Amelia McQuillan, Castlebar Primary School, 21.

Boys top performers:

1st Cian Mannion, Coosan National School, 24; 2nd Max Humphreys, Ballinrobe Community School, 23; gross Issac Oliver, Colaiste Chiaráin, Athlone, 22; 3rd Ciaran Murray, Croi Muire, Strokestown, 21.
