South Mayo town square requires surface improvement works

A PROPER tarmac surface for the Square in Ballindine has been requested.

The topic was raised at a Claremorris-Swinford Municipal District meeting by way of a motion from Councillor Richard Finn.

For some years now the residents and business people of Ballindine have been lobbying to have a proper tarmac surface on the Square, he said.

The councillor requested that the area engineer would have the job included in next year's roadworks programme.

It is important, he said, that people are given an opportunity to have the town square as their centrepiece. It wouldn't cost a fortune and would give the town a lift.

A lot had been done in Ballindine but this was outstanding and it is an area where they could do something for the local people, he told management.

Councillor Tom Connolly agreed that this area needs to be addressed, and he complimented the local Tidy Towns group on the work they are doing.

Councillor Finn suggested that if the works didnt fall into the roads work programme the council could look at it as a town and village renewal scheme and draw up a blueprint.

Senior engineer Conrad Harley said the Square does not fall under the road works programme. There are, however, different measures which they will keep it in mind for under different grant schemes.

He agreed the area in question needs a revamp.
