Mayo beaches have 'excellent' bathing waters - EPA report

BATHING waters at 14 Mayo beaches are all reported as 'excellent', with a 15th beach classified as 'good' in the latest EPA report.

There are hopes now that popular west Mayo beach Old Head will regain its Blue Flag status having moved from 'good' in the last three years to 'excellent'.

The EPA's Bathing Water Quality in Ireland report for 2022 shows that water quality at the majority of the country's bathing waters meets or exceeds the appropriate standards. Some 79% of bathing sites have 'excellent’ water quality while 97% meet the minimum standard.

Westport Councillor Peter Flynn has expressed his delight at seeing see all key beaches in Mayo are showing 'excellent' or 'good' ratings.

He commented: “It's great news for Old Head after nearly 10 years with issues. Hopefully it will be getting its Blue Flag status restored this year along with Carrowmore and Bertra.”
