Tributes to retired Mayo school staff member on his passing

The death has taken place of Jim Conlon, The Brambles, Balla, and late of Springfield, Castlebar.

He died peacefully at his residence yesterday in the loving care of his family.

A retired member of the staff of St. Patrick's National School, Castlebar (now Castlebar Primary School senior campus) where he served as caretaker for many years, he had a long association with Castlebar Athletics Club as a coach and official.

He was also an esteemed member of Balla Golf Club, serving as captain and president.

Warm tributes are being paid online to the deceased.

One stated: "Jim was a thorough gentleman and a great source of knowledge about the beautiful area in which we live. We loved our discussions about his beloved Reading F.C."

"Fondest and great memories of Jim's support, help and kindness during our times together in St. Patrick's National School, Castlebar," another stated.

A parent of a past pupil of the school said: "Jim always had a smile to greet us in the morning, will always remember his caring nature while working there."

Jim is deeply regretted by his loving wife Mary, daughters Julie and Claire, brother Pat (Balla), sister Bridie (Seattle), son-in-law Gerry Fitzgerald, grandchildren, Neil, Aoife, Emma, Kathryn and Emily, brothers-in-law, aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends, to whom sympathy is tendered.

He was predeceased by his parents Mary and Patrick, brother Tom and sister Anne.

His remains will be reposing at his residence (F23 CX24) on Saturday from 4.30 p.m. with removal at 6.30 p.m. to St. Cronan’s Church, Balla.

Funeral Mass takes place on Sunday at 12.30 p.m. with burial afterwards in adjoining cemetery.
