New building lands set to become available in Mayo when €300m. roadway opens

SOME years ago, Avison, an internationally known property company, inserted an advertisement in The Connaught Telegraph looking for twenty acres of land in Castlebar area, with or without planning permission.

It is not known they were successful in their quest - but their client was obviously optimistic that Castlebar was a town ready for major development and housing.

Mayo Council purchased a plot of land alongside the new N5 road and it will be interesting to see what plans the council has to develop this piece of property.

Planning permissions along major roadways are generally not allowed.

This regulation will apply to the new N5 roadway between Castlebar and Westport.

This will mean that major building land will become available on the old Castlebar-Westport road.

Castlebar is crying out for houses and it is now virtually impossible to procure accommodation in the county town.

It is generally felt Mayo County Council will have to devise both a short-term and long-term house building programme for the county town.

Houses in Castlebar are a fair bit cheaper than those available in Westport.

Westport has deservedly been described as the town ‘I would most like to live in’.

Such accolades, however, come at a price.

Especially when it relates to the cost of housing.
