Mayo senator expects Western Rail Corridor to reopen

SENATOR Lisa Chambers has expressed confidence that the Mayo-Galway rail link is to reopen.

In her latest newsletter, the Mayo senator says that the All Island Rail Review is likely to recommend the re-establishment of the rail connection between Mayo and Galway, a development she described as ‘transformative’.

“The All Island Rail Review has been tasked with looking at the rail network on the island. The WRC has formed part of its work and the review is now complete.

“It is expected to recommend reopening the WRC between Claremorris and Athenry for rail freight initially.

“The minister and government have indicated support for this and ultimately it will open for passengers in the future,” she stated.

“This is huge progress after many years of campaigning and it will be transformative for the region to re-establish the rail connection between Mayo and Galway,” she said.
