Thirty-eight new homes get go-ahead in Mayo county town

PROPOSALS for a 38-unit housing development in Castlebar have been given the go-ahead.

Permission was sought from Mayo County Council for 28 three-bedroom houses, six two-bedroom houses, and eight own-door, one bedroom maisonette apartments at Ballynaboll South, Castlebar, at the existing Manor Village estate.

The developers are Sayvale 19 Ltd., and the original 42-unit development was reduced to 38. Previously, planning was granted by An Bord Pleanála for 25 dwellings at the site.

The new application proposes a mix of housing units to suit different categories of households and providing better public spaces.

There were no formal objections but a number of observations were received from local residents in which concerns about increased traffic and safety at the location were raised, as well as impact on the environment and biodiversity.

Amenities such as a recreational area and the lack of a public bus stop on the Westport Road for older people or those with impaired mobility were also raised.
