Taoiseach to visit Mayo hospital as overcrowding crisis deepens

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will visit Mayo University Hospital on Thursday next.

The facility has been dealing with a serious overcrowding crisis in recent months due to bed shortages and a lack of capacity in the emergency unit.

Up to 35 patients were left without beds at the hospital's emergency department today, the second highest in the country behind University Hospital Limerick.

Local TD Alan Dillon said An Taoiseach is coming to Mayo to officially launch the €300 million new N5 Westport to Turlough Road project, taking place at the N5 Derrylea Roundabout in Castlebar.

Following this event, An Taoiseach will travel to Mayo University Hospital to engage with the hospital's management and staff, discussing future developments and plans for the facility.

Deputy Dillon stated: "Supporting investment in healthcare in Mayo is a key priority of mine and I am delighted that An Taoiseach has accepted my invitation to visit Mayo University Hospital on Thursday next.

"This visit provides an invaluable opportunity for him to meet with the dedicated management and staff of MUH and progress the plans in place for the facility.

"The hospital is a vital asset not only for the people of Mayo but also for the wider community.

"The visit by An Taoiseach underlines the commitment of the government to prioritize healthcare services and infrastructure in Mayo."

Deputy Dillon looks forward to a fruitful discussion on the future advancements and ongoing support required for Mayo University Hospital.
