New poetry trail being unveiled in east Mayo

A NEW poetry trail has been developed in Kiltimagh.

Six poems, set in limestone, are to be unveiled in various locations around the town.

The trail consists of poems by Mayo poets Geraldine Mitchell, Seán Lysaght, Ger Reidy, Terry McDonagh, Colette NicAodha and Daragh Byrne.

For the unveiling, the poets and friends will meet at the Park Hotel at 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 2, go on foot from plaque to plaque, where the poems will be unveiled and read by the authors. Afterwards there will be refreshments, music and poetry reading in the Folk Cafe.

The trail starts at the wetlands park on the Swinford Road and progresses on to the old forge, Market Square, Diamond's hardware shop, the parish centre, and finishing up at the sculpture park.

The project is a collaboration between Creative Ireland, Mayo County Council, Kiltimagh Tourism Association and Kiltimagh Tidy Towns.

The Tidy Towns group have extended thanks Austin Vaughan, county librarian, Terry McDonagh, Tom Kenny, Kenny’s Bookshop, Galway, Domnic Fannon, stonemason, Tom Meenaghan, Kiltimagh IRD, Kiltimagh Town Improvements Ltd., Patrick Browne Design and Mary McNicholas at Culchie Print for their support on the project.
