Accommodation in Mayo county town must return to student use

REASSURANCE has been sought that student accommodation being used to accommodate international protection applicants this summer will return to student use in the autumn.

The matter was raised by Councillor Donna Sheridan at a meeting of Mayo County Council.

They had received correspondence in relation to Hawthorn Village in Castlebar, that 102 applicants were to be housed there for two months.

She had asked for assurance that it will then revert back to student accommodation.

It they were interested in being a university town they had to have accommodation for them, she stated.

She acknowledged it should be used for the summer period but they had to have alternative accommodation for these people come September and ensure student accommodation is available for students.
