Local Ballina councillor Mark Duffy reveals the opening date for a new tourist hostel in the North Mayo town.

“Heyday, Hostel” is receiving some touch-ups and last-minute jobs ahead of its official opening to the public on Friday.

The former Cathaoirleach of Ballina, Mark Duffy shared with the Connaught Telegraph a behind-the-scenes peek at Mayo’s newest accommodation for tourists.

An impressive site, close to the River Moy, the hostel will sleep 38 people with a varying size of rooms to available to book.

Mark Duffy revealed his desire to bring a hostel to his hometown is now finally coming to fruition after years of planning and preparation.

“I’ve always had the idea, since travelling around Europe and staying in hostels in my mid-20s”

The councillor believes that Ballina has the potential to be the “Killarney of the North West” citing the town's increased profile over recent months due to the Joe Biden visit, the upcoming Salmon Festival and the Mary Robinson Climate Conference next month.

Ballina is set to host the Connaught Fleadh this weekend and the town is currently buzzing in anticipation to welcome thousands of tourists.
