Loftus elected cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council

MAYO County Council has a new cathaoirleach.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Loftus was elected to the position at the authority's annual general meeting this morning.

He was the unanimous choice for cathaoirleach with no other members proposed.

The Crossmolina man is the first councillor from the town to be appointed cathaoirleach.

He takes over at the helm from his fellow Ballina Municipal District colleague Councillor Seamus Weir.

In his address to members, Councillor Loftus touched on issues such as addressing housing provision, getting the pyrite scheme expedited, the need for increased garda numbers in the county, and locally the Crossmolina flood scheme, which is being held up.

He was congratulated, along with his family, on what was a proud day and was acknowledged for the high qualities he brings to his new role in representing his community and county.

Tribute was paid to Councillor Weir for his work over the past year, one of the highlights being the visit of President Joe Biden to Mayo.

In his address, he reflected on the importance of supporting and building communities.

Castlebar area Councillor Martin McLoughlin was elected leas-cathaoirleach, again unopposed.
