Mayo Garda Superintendent promoted

BALLINA-BASED Superintendent Gary Walsh has been promoted to the rank of Chief Superintendent.

His appointment was confirmed at a Mayo Joint Policing Committee meeting where Councillor Michael Loftus extended congratulations and wished him well.

The sad point, however, was that he was going to be lost from Ballina, he noted.

Councillor Loftus asked for a commitment that Supt. Walsh will be replaced.

The county, he pointed out, has already dropped from five to two superintendents.

Chief. Supt. Ray McMahon said appointments are a matter for the Garda Commissioner. He saw no reason why his colleague would not be replaced and he would be looking for a superintendent.
