Mayo's championship run ends at the quarterfinal stage

Dublin ended Mayo's Sam Maguire's hopes with an emphatic 2-17 to 0-11 victory in today's All-Ireland quarterfinal in Croke Park.

A blitz of 1-4 without reply at the start of the second half put Mayo eight points behind, and they were never able to recover from that.

Kevin McStay's charges managed just three points in the whole second half, while the Leinster champions racked up 1-11 in that space of time.

It meant that Dublin ended up 12-point winners after leading by just one at half-time - and that followed a first period in which Mayo arguably played the better football.

Ryan O'Donoghue was in great form during that half half, scoring five of Mayo's tally of eight points, with the others coming from his partners in the full-forward line, Tommy Conroy (two) and Aidan O'Shea (free).

Dublin were able to keep pace with Mayo, however, and scored the only goal of the first half when man of the match Colm Basquel took possession of a long ball behind the defence and finished low beyond Colm Reape, the Mayo 'keeper.

That score, on 18 minutes, put Dublin into a 1-3 to 0-4 lead but Mayo were leading by two (0-8 to 1-3) with 24 minutes on the clock.

Crucially, Dublin scored the next three points, including two frees), and combined with their 1-4 in the opening nine minutes of the second half, it put the game beyond Mayo in a flash.

Basquel scored his and Dublin's second goal on 40 minutes after Cormac Costello kept the ball in on the endline and set up his team-mate for a simple finish.

A Paddy Durcan point in the 48th minute was Mayo's first in 25 minutes, and they might have made more of a game of it had Eoghan McLaughlin found the net with a great chance a few minutes later. It went a-begging, however.

The Green and Red added just two more points throughout the remainder of the game through Jordan Flynn and Colm Reape (45') while Dublin were able to pick off some great scores to cement their superiority.

Reacting after the defeat, the Mayo manager, Kevin McStay, stated: “You couldn't take anything away from Dublin – they found their championship form in a big way today. They're a very, very fine team and we got a tough lesson today.”
