Former Mayo manager has his say on the Aidan O’Shea substitution

James Horan, who twice managed Mayo during separate spells was speaking on the Irish Examiner podcast about the weekend's Gaelic football quarter-finals.

Many Mayo fans were left scratching their heads as Breaffy man, Aidan O’Shea was substituted shortly after half-time for Cillian O’Connor.

James Horan stated “Kevin makes his own call, we mightn't maybe understand the role that Kevin wanted for Aidan, or what he was looking to change or whatever, he made a call on it. I probably wouldn't have.”

When the announcement of the substitution was made in Croke Park, Dublin supporters raised their voices. Horan remarked how “Dublin don't like playing against Aidan O'Shea, he certainly occupies their minds a little bit.”

The Ballintubber man did point out that it was his own belief that Aidan O’Shea should’ve stayed on and finished by saying “I'm not saying Kevin was wrong or anything, but I wouldn't have.”

Dublin eventually ran out 2:17 – 0:11 winners in the game in Croke Park and will now face Monaghan in the All-Ireland semi-final.
