Mayo launch of book celebrating a golden age in GAA

MAYO Books Press and Castle Books are hosting the Mayo launch of a new book celebrating a golden age in GAA history this week.

Jim Carney’s book on GAA greats Seán Purcell and Frank Stockwell has been a phenomenal success since its release earlier this month.

The two Gaelic football legends from Tuam were born within 10 days of each other in December 1928 and were heroes of Galway’s thrilling victory over Cork in the 1956 All-Ireland SFC final, and of the 10 county senior championship titles won by Tuam Stars between 1947 and 1962.

You can also read about Seán Purcell’s victories in Hogan Cup and Sigerson Cup finals, with many of his teammates from Mayo, including Mick Flanagan, Peter Solan, John Nallen and Mick Loftus. It highlights the respectful rivalry between Mayo and Galway going back several generations.

The launch takes place at Castle Books, Main Street, Castlebar, this Thursday, July 6, at 6.30 p.m. and is sure to be a nostalgia-filled trip down memory lane.

Jim Carney is a renowned journalist and broadcaster, who was the first ever presenter of The Sunday Game.

All are welcome to the launch.
