Hope that Newport housing crux will be resolved

IT is hoped to see progress on a stalled housing development in Newport this month.

An approved housing body are looking to progress 22 units at Black Oak Rise.

Mayo County Council are hopeful of a resolution to issues being reached in July - if not the local authority may have to step in and deliver it.

The matter was raised at a municipal district meeting by Councillor Peter Flynn who said it has been going on for three years, with these homes tied up at a time of a housing crisis.

The council's director of services for housing, Tom Gilligan, said there are issues. He is in talks with the CEO of the housing body and they hope to have matters resolved by July.

If not, the council may have no option but to step in.

The properties are part of the local authority's social housing targets.

If the housing body can't come up with a solution they would have no choice but to step in.

Councillor Flynn said it makes 'dire reading', 22 houses sitting vacant for three years. They need to be moved forward.
