Packed meeting hears of east Mayo biogas plant concerns

ROAD safety, the possible negative impact on the Moy via the Spaddagh River and quality of life for local residents were key concerns voiced at a public meeting on Wednesday evening in relation to a proposed biogas facility in Swinford.

The Gateway Hotel was packed for the meeting hosted by the Swinford Biogas Concern Group.

Organisers urged attendees and the wider public who have concerns to lodge their objections to Mayo County Council. People have until Friday, July 21, to submit them, or you can do so online up until July 23.

Transport Infrastructure Ireland have submitted an objection to the council, the meeting heard.

A previous application which was turned down by the council attracted 254 individual objections.

Group chairperson Moira Philbin told the meeting they were not against biogas but she pointed out that there is no regulation for the sector in Ireland at the moment unlike with solar and wind energy.
