Deputy Alan Dillon.

Call for greater ambition in pinpointing Mayo affordable housing sites

Mayo County Council must display more ambition in identifying unoccupied sites suitable for building affordable housing, Deputy Alan Dillon has stated.

The Castlebar-based representative elaborated: "Our objective is to ensure that individuals with moderate incomes can afford to purchase a new home. Mayo County Council's recent affordability assessment for Westport led to the department's endorsement of 13 affordable housing units for West Mayo."

Nonetheless, Deputy Dillon emphasises that this is only the beginning.

"A recent council survey revealed that 775 households expressed interest in obtaining an affordable home through the council. It's encouraging to learn that the council is now actively pursuing a separate application for affordable housing in Castlebar."

Highlighting the abundant vacant sites and properties throughout the county, Deputy Dillon stated: "We need to encourage our council to make way for new, economically accessible homes for our people.”
