Artist immortalises iconic Mayo character Mick Melodeon in mural

A REMARKABLE display of artistic talent and community initiative, artist Louise Conroy has created a captivating mural in honour of the late Michael Tierney, affectionately known as Mick Melodeon.

The mural, a part of Love Castlebar's ‘between-the-space’ project, seeks to infuse the county town with vibrant colours and a renewed sense of life.

Mick Melodeon, a cherished figure from Castlebar's past, captivated locals with his musical prowess and friendly demeanour. Frequently found seated along an alleyway, Mick would greet passers-by with warmth and always had a kind word to share. His impact was so profound that some proudly display a photograph of him above their mantlepiece.

Louise, an active participant in the Love Castlebar movement and the artistic mind behind the Mick Melodeon mural, carefully selected a photo capturing Mick's essence to serve as the inspiration for her artwork.

Over the course of 10 days, she worked to immortalise Michael Tierney's image just off Main Street, paying tribute to the Tipperary native.

The public has rallied behind her, demonstrating unwavering support for the project. Local businesses offered Louise equipment, coffee and even a ladder to ensure the mural received the attention and detail it deserves.

Their involvement reflects the deep appreciation within the community for the fusion of art and activism, with Louise's passion for both proving invaluable to the growth of the county town.

Love Castlebar's ‘between-the-space’ initiative, previously responsible for notable projects such as the ‘Believe’ sign and the installation of bird boxes throughout town, unfortunately experienced setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fortunately, the movement is resuming its efforts to enhance the town's aesthetic appeal and create vibrant spaces.

Humbert Way, an integral part of Castlebar, has now been adorned with the mural of Mick Melodeon, serving as a vibrant testament to the town's rich heritage and the spirit of its inhabitants.

Through art and community collaboration, Love Castlebar continues to forge bonds and foster a sense of pride in the county town, showcasing the power of creativity to unite and uplift its residents.
