Tributes to popular Mayo personality on his passing

The death has occurred of John Doherty, 'Oaklands,' Killala Road, Ballina.

He died suddenly on Thursday at Sligo University Hospital.

He is sadly missed by his loving wife Ann, son Tomás (Foxford) and Aoife Noctor (UK), sister Kathryn Brennan (Castlebar), son-in-law Danny Noctor, daughter-in-law Nadine, grandchildren Sean, Bonnie and Matilda, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends, to whom sympathy is extended.

John was predeceased by his parents Tom and Phyllis Doherty, Bohernasup, Ballina, and his brother Pat, Castlebar.

Warm tributes are being paid to him on social media, where he was deceased as 'a true gentleman'.

One stated: "Many happy memories of being neighbours in Clare Street, past pupils of Scoil Phadraig and our football exploits in Scoil Phadraig and James Stephens Park.

"Later we were committee members of Ballina Stephenites Supporters Club and enjoyed days on the golf course. Go ndeana Dia trocaire ar a hanam dilis."

Another said: "John was a kind and gentle soul, may he rest in peace."

A further tribute stated: "He was always a gentleman with a smile on his face, always so pleasant to meet and chat with."

His remains will be reposing at McGowan's Funeral Home, Ballina, on Sunday evening from 5 p.m. with removal at 6:30 p.m. to St. Muredach's Cathedral, Ballina.

Requiem Mass on Monday morning at 11:30 a.m. followed by burial in Leigue Cemetery,
