“Football is a religion here” former Mayo GAA star speaks about his love of the game

Lee Keegan, the former Mayo GAA star, has traded his inter-county boots for a new chapter in his football journey.

The renowned player, who retired last season, is now eagerly embracing club action and is poised to showcase his skills once again, donning the blue and navy of his native Westport in an upcoming league final.

Speaking exclusively to Specsavers, the ex-GAA Player of the Year expressed his elation over Westport's historic victory winning the Moclair Cup last season.

The joy of the moment was made even more memorable by the overwhelming support of “approximately 10 thousand people" who lined the streets to greet the triumphant team.

Keegan emphasised that this incredible display of support demonstrates the profound impact football has on the local community, calling it nothing short of a religion.

Now, with his sights firmly set on new goals, the 33-year-old football stalwart is determined to lead his native Westport to retain the coveted title this year.

But, before the championship campaign commences, his side face a formidable challenge in the form of the Division One league final against their arch-rivals, Castlebar Mitchels, this Saturday.

Although Keegan has bid adieu to his inter-county career, his passion for football remains unyielding. His transition to the role of an RTÉ pundit allows him to stay connected with the sport he cherishes while providing valuable insights and analysis to football enthusiasts.
