Mayo golfers retain Connacht Junior Cup title

THE Castlebar Golf Club women's Junior Cup team defeated a strong Athenry side 3-2 to win the Connacht Junior Cup final in Westport Golf Club, retaining the title they won in 2022.

Some fantastic golf was delivered by both sides despite the strong, blustery winds that prevailed for the entire of the matches at the weekend.

The ladies showed great character and resilience to produce what was required to see off a very strong challenge from Athenry, who are formidable opponents, and take home another Connacht Pennant for the club.

The ladies now progress to the All-Ireland quarterfinal in Farnham Estate GC, Cavan, to play the winners of Ulster South in September.

The Junior Cup team who defeated Athenry comprised Sarah Prendergast, Sheila Baynes, Leah Kerr, Carmel Moran and Eimear Minogue. Subs: Breda Gilvarry and Evelyn Brady.

Managers were Anne O'Sullivan and Nicola Sheridan, with great encouragement from caddies John Cannon, Regina Kerr, Gina Kelly, Connie White and Terri Fahy in a brilliant outcome on Saturday.

The team has thanked all the loyal supporters who braved the elements and travelled to Westport to support them.
