Funding request for 1798 festival in Mayo's county town

A CASTLEBAR councillor has requested financial support for the upcoming 1798 festival in the town to mark the 225th year of the arrival of General Humbert.

Mayo County Council has applied for funding for 1798 events.

Councillor Ger Deere, at a municipal district meeting, pointed out that Castlebar had a pivital role in the events of that year and it had to get a portion of any funding.

If funding is allocated, it didn't all have to go to Killala and Ballina, he told management.

Councillor Donna Sheridan paid tribute to the Castlebar festival organisers, saying the event is going to be 'fantastic'.

Councillor Cyril Burke agreed the festival is very welcome and they should support it in every way they can.
