Mayo Day event for Belmullet's 200th celebrations

BELMULLET has requested to be host town for the Mayo Day 2024 flagship event as part of its 200th birthday celebrations.

Local Councillor Sean Carey formally made the request at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council.

He explained how the landlord, Carter, arrived in Belmullet on May 1, 1824, his design engineer having been there before that and drawing up plans for the town.

There is an active committee for the bi-centenary celebrations, comprising business and community organisations.

Council colleagues supported his request, with Councillor Patsy O'Brien suggesting that it should be policy that the event is rotated around the county.
