Mayo eco group invites nature lovers to Breaffy

By Emma Horan

Breaffy 2030, a community environmental group in west Mayo will be celebrating all things water this coming Sunday, August 13.

A ‘walk and talk’ biodiversity event and live artist performance will take place to raise awareness about our water heritage.

This event will be part of National Heritage Week, a wider network of events throughout the country focusing on ‘Living Heritage’.

Join in on this exciting exploration of the biodiversity of the local stream on the grounds of Breaffy House Hotel. Esteemed ecologist Aengus Kennedy will lead a child-friendly ‘walk and talk’ tour looking at the riverside vegetation, water insects, searching for dragonflies and discussing how the nature around the stream affects our water systems.

This will be followed by a water-based improvised performance by Welsh artist Fay Burnett, ‘Embodied Listening - Moving with the Landscape’. Fay creates works with an environmental awareness exploring themes of ‘slow time’, relationship, gender, ecological state and mythology.

At this time of catastrophic ecological crises resulting from our disconnect to our natural environment, it is important to remember the value of our water heritage. This celebratory event will help us do so, calling us to be active and reciprocal participants with our biosphere once more.

The event will kick off at 11 a.m. on Sunday, August 13, at the Astroturf pitch in Breaffy House Resort.

Refreshments from a solar-powered coffee truck will also be available. For more details see the National Heritage Week online.
