Mayo athletes impress on the Streets of Galway

On Saturday evening last (August 12), the 37th edition of the Streets of Galway 8k road race was hosted by Galway City Harriers and as usual a huge field assembled at Fr. Griffin Road, writes Tom Hunt.

The course took athletes through the city centre, out into a south westerly breeze along St. Mary’s Road to Salthill, and back along the bay with the wind to the South Park finish.

The race winner was David McGlynn of Waterford AC in 24:07. Íde Ní Dhomhaill of Donore Harriers was the first woman home in 26:48, just two seconds better than her winning time last year. Two weeks ago she won the national senior 5,000m title in Morton Stadium in 15:44.

Mayo AC's Norah Newcombe Pieterse was third woman finisher in a brilliant new personal best (PB) of 28:40. Norah has been in great form this year, as shown in the Elverys Intersport Mayo AC 5k Series in May and in running a 10k PB in the Dunshaughlin in June.

In the 2019 edition of the Streets of Galway 8k, Norah finished in fourth place in 29:05.

Well done to Mayo AC’s other Galway finishers, who were led home by Padraic McVann in 31:59 (31:54) and fifth M50.

The other Mayo AC finishers were: Damien Finnegan 33:13 (33:06); Ann McDonnell 35:34 (35:13) – first in F45 category and a fantastic new PB, improving on her 35:56 in the same race last year; Dee Finnegan 37:11 (36:49); John Nyland 37:50 (37:29); Martin Parsons 39:22 (39:01); and Caitlin Woods 40:06 (39:01).

The results above are race time/chip times. Finish order and prizes are determined by race time.

On the previous weekend (August 4), two Mayo AC runners completed the annual Kinsale Regatta 5 Mile. Well done to Padraic McVann, who finished fifth M50 in 31:45, and Angela McVann, who was third F50 in 37:32.

First of the 455 finishers was Jeremy O’Donovan of St. Finbarr’s AC in 26:10, with Aoife Cooke of Eagle AC the first woman home in 26:55.

The Mayo County 10k Championships, hosted by Swinford AC, take place this evening (Wednesday) at 7.30 p.m. Registration is open from 6.30 p.m. at Killasser Community Centre (F12 HH97).
