Castlebar Celtic overcome Westport in Mayo U-21 play-off final after thrilling penalty shootout

Castlebar Celtic emerged victorious in a riveting Mayo under 21 Play-off Final against Westport United, clinching victory with a 4-3 penalty shootout win after a gripping 2-2 draw.

The clash of these under 21 powerhouses unfolded at Solar 21 Milebush Park, showcasing the finest talents in the county's football scene.

The action commenced with a bang as Castlebar Celtic's Oran Groarke capitalised on an early defensive lapse, securing a lead inside five minutes. This set the tone for a match where chances abounded for both sides. Westport United's Jack Dawson found himself with a prime opportunity, only to be thwarted by Castlebar Celtic's impressive shot-stopper, Peter Basquelle.

As the first half unfolded, Castlebar Celtic maintained their one-goal advantage, with Westport United's determined efforts to level the score. However, the relentless pressure bore fruit on the hour mark when Westport's Ted Horan netted a precise header, restoring parity to the scoreboard.

Westport United seized the lead with just twenty minutes remaining, as Dylan Duane's masterful left-footed strike found the back of the net.

In the dying moments of regular time, Celtic's Mark Cunningham exploited a defensive mix-up, equalising with a well-timed header. With no further goals in extra time, the match came down to a penalty shootout that would etch the winner's name in history.

In the penalty drama, Castlebar Celtic held their nerve, winning 4-3. Oran Groarke, Cian Walsh, Fionn Mahon, and Adam Diamond-Keane successfully converted their spot kicks for Celtic, while Jack Dawson, Dylan O'Malley, and Dan O'Malley netted for Westport United. Luke Kelly's miss from the spot for Celtic added a moment of tension, but in the end, Castlebar Celtic's resilience shone through.
