Mayo senior champions issue a warning to would-be rivals

Westport issued a warning to all potential rivals for their Connacht Gold Mayo Senior Football Championship title with a thumping victory over Charlestown on Saturday evening.

The defending champions ran out 3-20 to 0-6 winners against their east Mayo opponents in Group 2 this evening, setting themselves up nicely to reach the quarterfinals after just the opening round.

The other teams in the group, Claremorris and Ballaghaderreen, were involved in a much tighter affair, with visitors Ballagh' picking up a 0-13 to 0-10 victory in south Mayo.

The only other senior game played this evening was the high profile Group 4 encounter between Knockmore and Castlebar Mitchels.

Knockmore, back-to-back champions in 2020 and 2021, were 0-5 to 0-2 up at the break but Mitchels fought back to take a point home, the game finishing level on 0-9 apiece.

The Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championship got off to a start on Friday night in the Connacht GAA Centre of Excellence, where Kiltimagh were fairly well beaten in the end by Louisburgh in their Group 2 encounter. It finished Louisburgh 1-10, Kiltimagh 0-5.

In the same group on Saturday, Kilmeena ran out convincing 1-13 to 0-7 winners against Ardnaree.

In Group 1, Parke-Keelogues-Crimlin came away from Ballindine with two points following a two-point victory over hosts Davitts (1-13 to 1-11), while Islandeady eventually pulled away from Bonniconlon to win by seven points (2-11 to 1-7).

The Group 4 encounter between Crossmolina Deel Rovers and Kilmaine in St. Tiernan's Park resulted in a 1-11 to 0-9 win for the home side, who put in a strong second-half showing.

Finally, in Group 3, there were convincing away wins for Hollymount/Carramore at Kiltane (2-13 to 0-8) and Ballinrobe at Burrishoole (6-9 to 0-9).

In the TF Royal Hotel & Theatre Junior Football Championship, Cill Chomáín secured a hard-fought 0-11 to 0-8 victory over north Mayo rivals Ardagh. There were also victories in Group 4 for Swinford away to Ballycroy by 1-8 to 0-5 (in a game that had a lengthy delay to deal with an injured player) and Lahardane away to Moygownagh by 1-18 to 0-7.

The action continues on Sunday all around the county in all three grades.
