South Mayo chosen for new youth diversion project
Claremorris has been selected as one of four new locations for a youth diversion project (YDP).
The project, which will be run by North Connaught Youth & Community Service (NCYCS), will provide support and services to young people at risk of crime and anti-social behaviour.
Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has welcomed the announcement.
He stated: "I congratulate all those involved with this successful application for Mayo.
"I am thrilled that Claremorris has being chosen as a recipient of the new YDP.
"YDPs play a vital role in preventing young people from getting involved in crime and helping them to build positive futures.
This project will provide much-needed support to young people in our community.”
The announcement of Claremorris being chosen as one of the four new YDP locations across the country marks a significant milestone for the county.
The chosen YDP located in Claremorris is poised to receive a substantial allocation of at least €375,000 in the next year.
This investment will undoubtedly have a far-reaching impact on the community, providing invaluable opportunities for young individuals to thrive.
The youth diversion projects are primarily targeted at 12-17 year old “at risk” young people in communities where a specific need has been identified and where there is a risk of them coming into contact with or remaining within the justice system.
The YDP will offer a range of services, including:
· Individual and group counselling
· Mentoring
· Educational and employment support
· Family support
· Recreational activities
Deputy Dillon acknowledged the contribution of NCYCS CEO Pat Forde, whose leadership was important for this achievement, and Ger Lovett, the YTD Coordinator for Mayo, who played a key role in its careful planning.
"I thank Minister Helen McEntee and Minister James Browne for their commitment to youth diversion.
"This project is a great example of how we can work together to create safer and more supportive communities for our young people," added Deputy Dillon.
The new YDP is expected to be operational in the coming months.
