Record price set at Mayo mart

A RECORD price for a cow with a calf at foot was set at Balla Mart on Saturday.

The suckler cow, sold by a farmer from Ballina, made a record price of €4,650 in front of a full house.

The 2019 born second calf Limousin cow had an eight-month-old roan heifer calf at foot and is back in calf to a purebred four-star Limousin stock bull.

Stock numbers are increasing again at Balla Mart as we head into the back end. Last Saturday's sale filled up well and there was a good trade all round with the presence of new blood around the ring.

In the bullocks, a LMX weighing 365kg made €1,220, sold by a Claremorris farmer, while a heavier example weighing 765kg made €2,300 for a Ballina farmer.

There were just over 300 heifers for sale and a lot were strong heifers, with some fine heifers making over €3/kg. One Limousin, 495kg, made €1,640, sold by a farmer from Foxford. A heavier LMX, 600kg, was sold for €2,000 by a Castlebar farmer.

There was a good sale of dry cows with just over 100 lots, in general making from €2.40 to €2.70/kg, and prices are sticking firm with interest from Northern Ireland buyers around the ring and online. One 920kg Limousin cow made €2,450, sold to a northern buyer.
