Sixteen new social houses approved for Mayo

MAYO County Council has received stage 1 approval for the delivery of 16 new social housing units in the county.

Twelve of the units will be developed in Ballinrobe, with four to be constructed in Bonniconlon.

The approvals represent a total investment of €5.1 million, the director of services for housing, Tom Gilligan, told a housing committee meeting.

Mayo County Council has acquired a number of sites around the county recently for housing, including in Castlebar, Lahardane, Ballina and Bangor Erris.

Discussions in relation to a number of other sites are ongoing, the director confirmed.

In other housing news, the council has had tender returns on projects at Mount Street, Claremorris, and in Cross West. And there will be tender returns coming for units in Ballyvary.

Approval has also been received to proceed to site on the construction of nine units in Carnacon, hopefully by the end of the month.
