Mayo vacant home matchmaker scheme aims to connect owners with buyers

Mayo County Council is taking innovative steps to address the issue of vacant properties in the county with its "Mayo Vacant Home Matchmaker Scheme." This unique initiative aims to bridge the gap between property owners seeking to sell their vacant homes and potential buyers looking to invest in these properties.

The primary objective of the scheme is to create a win-win situation for both property owners and buyers. Whether a vacant property requires extensive repairs or is move-in ready, it can be listed on the scheme. The best part? This service is entirely free for all participants.

The Mayo Vacant Home Matchmaker Scheme operates by maintaining two lists—one for potential buyers and the other for owners interested in selling their vacant properties. The Council then plays a pivotal role in identifying matches between these two lists. When a suitable match is found, both parties receive each other's contact details, allowing them to initiate further discussions and negotiations.

Tom Gilligan, Director of Services for Mayo County Council, stated the benefits of the scheme, "For both the vacant property owner and the potential buyer, this is a win-win as it’s a service that is totally free for both." He added that there is a diverse range of vacant homes available, from contemporary to period properties, in various conditions, and spread across different areas within the county.

It's important to note that the Mayo Vacant Home Matchmaker Scheme is not an estate agency. All negotiations and sales processes are conducted directly between the property owner and the buyer. To ensure a smooth transaction, both parties are encouraged to seek independent professional advice, including property valuation and legal guidance from solicitors or estate agents.

Mayo County Council's role is limited to providing relevant contact details for property owners and potential buyers. The council have reiterated the importance of genuine and interested inquiries, promoting a transparent and efficient process.

If you're interested in participating in the scheme, simply contact Mayo County Council at vacanthomes@mayococo.ie with "Mayo Vacant Home Matchmaker" as the subject/title. Property owners looking to sell vacant homes should provide all relevant property details to facilitate potential matches.
