Bright approach to revival of Mayo county town centre is applauded
The future development of Castlebar’s commercial and retail core is dependent on a greater level of partnership between Mayo County Council and the local business sector, a local elected representative has stated.
Long-serving Councillor Blackie Gavin cited the joint venture between local businessman Pat Staunton and the authority in the re-configuration of the new-look Hoban’s car park as a template for the regeneration of the town centre.
After years of development being delayed or halted by exorbitant betterment levies, Councillor Gavin said there is an onus on the council to drive the revival of the county town with the support of stakeholders.
He said: “What is now happening in respect of the car park is a win-win situation for both sides and I know it is helping to restore confidence in the minds of investors.
“The courage of business people like Pat Staunton and others needs to be commended and it’s vital that Castlebar Municipal District is central to making more developments happen.”
Added Councillor Gavin: “I know the Staunton family has further plans for Main Street and other business owners will follow suit if they know the climate is right to do so.
“There are plans in the pipeline for the former Upper Crust Bakery site while ambitious proposals have been revealed in respect of Castle Street and a section of the former Convent of Mercy property.
“Work needs to start soon on the €11 million investment in the historic core district, which includes the former Imperial Hotel, and I am hopeful of further private investment in the Market Square, Mill Lane and Linenhall Street areas over the coming months and years.
“To continue to attract consumer spending to the town, it goes without saying that this and other investment is required.
“We have looked very closely at the new town development plan to ensure Castlebar keeps apace with the need for further housing and commercial infrastructure.
“We cannot stand still and I feel very optimistic for the town going forward.”
