Impact of industrial action by council employees will be monitored

THE impact of industrial action by Mayo County Council staff who are Fórsa members will be monitored over the coming days.

Local authority staff across the country who are members of the trade union are not engaging with elected representatives as they take action in a dispute over pay and conditions.

The matter was addressed by chief executive Kevin Kelly at the monthly meeting of Mayo County Council on Monday.

The industrial action served on every local authority will initially commence with a ban on engagement with political representatives, verbal and email.

If matters are to be resolved, it will be at national level not local level, he said.

There is an impact on councillors and Oireachtas to carry out their representational roles and they had to ascertain what that impact is in the coming days.

Not every staff member is in the Fórsa union and there are other unions that are not impacted.

Mr. Kelly said the matter would be monitored closely over the next number of days to see how best the impacts can be managed without cutting across the industrial action.

Elected members, he said, will be kept advised.
