Plans for additional daily Mayo rail service

IARNRÓD Éireann, in conjunction with the National Transport Authority, has announced plans to introduce a new daily train service in each direction between Westport and Athlone, connecting at Athlone to trains to/from Dublin Heuston and Galway, from December.

The new services - part of a draft timetable now open for public consultation feedback - will operate at 16:20hrs from Westport to Athlone, and 21:08hrs from Athlone to Westport (Monday to Saturday) from December 10 under the draft schedule.

The 21:08hrs service from Athlone to Westport will also have a connection at Manulla Junction to/from Ballina, and represents a new later last departure from Dublin Heuston for Mayo-bound rail customers, transferring from the 19:35hrs Heuston to Galway at Athlone.

The extra service will mean there will now be five services available from Dublin Heuston to Westport daily, and six from Westport to Heuston.

The company has published details of the proposed schedule and has invited the public to submit feedback in advance of the finalisation of the new timetable.

A number of other minor schedule alterations to improve punctuality.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesperson said: “Following expansion of services in December 2022, Iarnród Éireann with the National Transport Authority have identified opportunities for further service improvements in the context of post-COVID travel patterns, as demand approaches, and on some routes exceeds, pre-pandemic levels.

“We are particularly pleased to be able to propose a later connection for both Westport and Ballina, which will expand options for travel to/from counties Roscommon and Mayo.

“We encourage all current customers and all considering rail for their sustainable travel options to review the proposed changes, and give us their feedback, as we finalise the new schedule.”

In a statement Deputy Alan Dillon welcomed the proposed enhancements to the Iarnród Éireann timetable, emphasising the benefits it will bring to the residents of Mayo

Deputy Dillon said: “From the 10th of December 2023, Iarnród Éireann, in collaboration with the National Transport Authority, will introduce new schedules across several Intercity and Commuter routes. These changes, notably the addition of services to/from Westport, are projected to provide commuters, families, and businesses in Mayo with more travel options, boosting connectivity and accessibility.

"The additional service from Westport to Athlone and the connection from Ballina to the new Athlone-Westport evening service are commendable steps towards improving the region's transportation network. These new routes will greatly benefit our Mayo constituents, enhancing mobility and potentially boosting local tourism and business.

"I encourage everyone in Mayo and beyond to review the proposed timetable and provide feedback.

"Your insights will ensure that the finalised schedules are truly reflective of the community's needs.

"I will continue to beat the drum in Dail Eireann and on the Oireachtas Transport committee which I am a member for enhanced transport services in our county.

"The recent announcement of Citylink/GoBus new express service starting on the 25th September will seamlessly connect Castlebar, Claremorris, Tuam, Athlone, Dublin City, and Dublin Airport is a huge win for Mayo commuters and this news from Irish is another boost for the people of the west.

The public consultation is now open. Feedback is invited for all routes, regardless of whether changes are proposed."

Ballina Councillor Mark Duffy said it is a brilliant addition to the county and he thanked those who supported his campaign to improve rail connectivity in Mayo.
