Two route options presented for west Mayo greenway extension
TWO route options have been presented for the Belclare - Murrisk greenway.
An information session is taking place today (Wednesday) until 7 p.m. in the Tavern in Murrisk, where members of the public can view the options.
Councillor Peter Flynn has issued an update on social media on the two route options presented today.
In summary, Option 1 is 4.5km stretch following the existing route along the road with a potential small variation.
Option 2 is a 6.5km route from Aughavale graveyard along an old famine trail, which would run to the bottom of Croagh Patrick along the hills.
He commented: “At first glance Option 2 looks amazing given it is away from traffic, has some magnificent views and takes in some significant heritage sites.
“All going to plan the preferred route will be published later this year with planning to follow in Q1/Q2 next year. Once planning is secured the hope would be to agree compensation with land owners along the route.”
Councillor Flynn added: “It is a shame we are not evaluating route options all the way to Louisburgh and Roonagh but given the history, it is not surprising that TII are taking a conservative approach. If this section avoids any controversy and we avoid Bord Pleanála or courts, I would be hopeful the route from Murrisk to Louisburgh and Roonagh could start to progress in 2026.
“Fingers crossed this is the start of some positive progress on completing the Clew Bay Loop.”
