Mayo TD calls for dedicated grant scheme for community playgrounds maintenance

A dedicated grant scheme is required for the maintenance and improvement of playgrounds that benefit children and young people in their communities, Mayo Fine Gael TD Alan Dillon has said.

Deputy Dillon has highlighted that local community groups in Mayo and across the country have played a pivotal role in developing the vast majority of playgrounds, with essential support from various state funding schemes.

He said: “Many of these public and community playgrounds are now well over a decade old and we are starting to see safety issues arise, along with the need for general maintenance.

“Upgrading or completely replacing equipment has become increasingly essential, and the absence of such upgrades often poses challenges in obtaining insurance coverage.

“Unfortunately, Mayo County Council has fallen short in fulfilling its responsibilities by allocating inadequate budgetary funds for these purposes. As a result, numerous pieces of equipment in public playgrounds under their ownership have fallen into disrepair, ultimately compromising the well-being and recreational opportunities for our children.”

Deputy Dillon emphasised that the build-up of these problems is becoming a significant concern for parents and the dedicated volunteers who work tirelessly in communities.

To address these issues, the Mayo TD is strongly campaigning for the establishment of a dedicated grant scheme, specifically geared towards the maintenance and upgrading of community playgrounds.

“I have already raised this pressing matter with my cabinet colleague, Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, who assured me of her openness to examine the issue,” Deputy Dillon added.

For the most efficient allocation of funds, Deputy Dillon has suggested channelling the funding through the Department of Rural and Community Development. He acknowledged Minister Humphreys and her team for their valuable experience in shaping funding schemes and ensuring value for taxpayers' money.

Deputy Dillon pointed out that they can build upon the success of a recent scheme aimed at upgrading community centres.

“The response to last year's Community Centres Investment Fund was exceptional. Over €45.8 million was allocated to refurbish more than 860 community centres, transforming them into safer, more accessible and enjoyable spaces for families and communities.”

Deputy Dillon concluded: “I have already called on my Fine Gael cabinet colleagues for the inclusion of the Community Playground Upgrade Scheme in the upcoming budget to ensure that playgrounds throughout the country become safer and more appealing, and continue to be valued assets within their communities.”
